High Voltage Tester
A High Voltage Tester, also known as a Breakdown Voltage Tester (BDV Tester), is an essential testing instrument used to measure the breakdown or flashover voltage of electrical components and insulation materials. These testers are widely used to evaluate the dielectric strength and insulation quality of electrical equipment before they are deployed in practical applications.
High Voltage Testers play a critical role in quality control and safety assurance by determining the voltage level at which insulation fails or breaks down. This testing process helps manufacturers and users verify the reliability and performance of insulation systems used in electrical components such as transformer, cables, switchgear, insulators, instruments, and other high-voltage equipment.
For High Voltage Testers rated up to 5 kV – 10 kV, the equipment is generally designed as a compact unit with all operational controls mounted on the front panel. The front panel typically includes essential controls and indicators for easy operation. The unit is provided with high voltage test probes connected through HT cables, which can be directly connected to the device or component under test for convenient and efficient testing.
For higher voltage testing applications above 10 kV and up to 120 kV, the system is typically supplied with a separate high voltage transformer and a dedicated control panel, positioned at a safe operating distance of approximately 6 meters from the test transformer. This arrangement enhances operator safety while performing high-voltage testing.
The control panel is equipped with various instruments and protection devices, including:
- kV Meter for voltage measurement
- mA Meter for leakage current monitoring
- MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) for circuit protection
- Timer controls for controlled testing duration
- Indicator lamps and safety interlocks
- Automatic tripping mechanisms for overload or fault conditions
These features ensure accurate testing, safe operation, and reliable performance while evaluating insulation strength.
