Residual Voltage Transformer (RVT)
A Residual Voltage Transformer (RVT) is designed to detect and extract the residual voltage (earth fault voltage) present in a power system. This voltage is obtained across the open delta (broken delta) winding of the transformer and is primarily used for earth fault detection and protection in electrical networks.
Under normal operating conditions, the residual voltage across the open delta winding remains zero or negligible. However, when an earth fault occurs in the system, a residual voltage is developed across this winding. This voltage signal is then used to operate protection relays, enabling quick detection and isolation of the faulty section of the network, thereby enhancing system safety and reliability.
Residual Voltage Transformer are widely used in residual earth fault protection schemes and also play an important role in discharging capacitor banks, ensuring safe operation of power systems.
In addition to the protection winding, a dedicated metering secondary winding is also provided to facilitate accurate voltage measurement for monitoring and metering applications.
